Ribbon Star Quilt Block

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
  • Lead pencil & white pencil
  • Straight quilter's pins
  • Stitch ripper
  • Rotary cutter
  • 18"x 24" cutting mat
  • 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
  • Iron & pressing surface
  • Sewing machine
  • Two sandwich-size plastic bags

  • MEASUREMENTS: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12"x 12")

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Pay close attention to the direction the triangles are placed in when sewing units together.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:

      • Label the two sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Center Square Bag, Ribbon Corner, Finishing Pieces Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated.

        • _x000B_Fabric A:
          • Four 3 1/2" squares (Ribbon Corner Bag)
          • Two 4 1/4" squares (Ribbon Corner Bag)
        • Fabric C:
          • Two 4 1/2" squares & one 6 7/8" square (Center Square Bag)
          • One 4 1/4" square (Ribbon Corner Bag)
        • Fabric E:
          • Two 4 1/2" squares & one 6 7/8" square (Center Square Bag)
          • One 4 1/4" square (Ribbon Corner Bag)
        • Fabrics B & D are not used in this block.

    2. Sew a Center Square Unit:

      • Use pieces from Center Square Bag.
      • Refer to Diagrams 1-3, following the steps below.
      • Cut the 6 7/8" Fabric C and E squares in half diagonally.
      • Put aside.
      • Draw a diagonal line across wrong side of the two 4 1/2" Fabric C and E squares.
      • Place a marked 4 1/2" Fabric C square over a 6 7/8" Fabric E square right sides together, with the corner of the opposite side of the drawn line lined up perfectly with the 45 degree angle on the Fabric E triangle as shown in Diagram 2.
      • Pin in place.
      • Position the remaining Fabric C square and Fabric E square.
      • Sew directly over the line on both pinned units.
      • Checked to see that corners still line up exactly, re-sewing if necessary.
      • Trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric C.
      • Repeat steps using the remaining pieces in the Center Square Bag as shown in Diagram 3.
      • Pin, sew and check to see that corners line up.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric C.
      • Pin opposite units into two pairs with wrong together as shown in Diagram 4.
      • Sew and press as shown.
      • Pin pairs with wrong together as shown in Diagram 4.
      • Sew and press as shown.
      • Put aside.

    3. Sew Ribbon Corner Units:

      • Use pieces from Ribbon Corner Bag.
      • Refer to Diagrams 5-7, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the two 4 1/4" Fabric A squares.
      • Pair one of the marked Fabric A squares with the 4 1/4" Fabric C square.
      • Pair remaining marked Fabric A square with the 4 1/4" Fabric E square._x000B_Pin pieces right sides together so the corners match exactly.
      • Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
      • Cut along the drawn line on each to yield two Fabric A/C half square triangle units and two Fabric A/E half square triangle units.
      • Press seam allowances open.
      • Snip off extending corner points.
      • Cut each of the units in half diagonally as shown in Diagram 6.
      • This will yield eight units:_x000B_Two sets of two mirror-imaged A/C units and A/E units.
      • Pair units with 3 1/2" Fabric A squares as shown in Diagram 7.
      • Pin, sew and press as shown.

    4. Complete the Ribbon Star Block:

      • Refer to Diagrams 8-9, following the steps below.
      • Arrange the A/C Ribbon Corner units and Fabric E edge sides of the Center Square as shown in Diagram 8._x000B_Sew and press seam allowances toward Ribbon Corner units.
      • Pin the A/E Ribbon Corner units to the Fabric C edge sides of the Center Square as shown in Diagram 9.
      • Sew and press seam allowances toward Ribbon Corner units to complete the Ribbon Star block.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
