DIRECTIONS:

PLAYMAT:

  1. Cut a 38" circle into the front and back fabrics.
  2. Print out the attached petal pattern and cut out all 24 pairs of petals (total of 48 pieces).
  3. With the right sides together for each of the 24 petals, stitch around the U-shape using a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave the straight edge bottom open.
  4. Clip the curves of each seam allowance.
  5. Turn the petals and press.
  6. Fill each petal with polyfil (don't overstuff).
  7. Stitch the openings closed using a 1/4" seam allowance.
  8. Lay out the front circular fabric piece with the right side of the fabric facing up.
  9. With the petals laying inside the circle, line up the raw edges of the circle with the raw edges of the petals around the entire perimeter. Pin or clip to stay in place. Stitch around the edge using a 1/4" seam allowance.
  10. Lay the circular back piece on top of the front/petals. Make sure the right sides are facing each other. Line up all the raw edges and pin or clip.
  11. Stitch all layers together using a 1/2" seam allowance. Leave an 8-10" opening for turning.
  12. Lay the circle on top of the batting and pin down. Cut off excess batting.
  13. This will be quite thick at this point but the batting needs to be held in place before flipping. Either stitch around the perimeter using a 1/4" seam allowance or make small stitches approx. every 10" around the perimeter to hold in place. Don't stitch over the opening!
  14. Turn the mat right side out.
  15. Using a needle and thread, sew the opening closed using an invisible stitch.
  16. Using a fabric pen and rulers as your guide, mark the middle of the circle, and then the subsequent 2 circles around that middle mark to quilt into the mat.
  17. Quilt both circles into the mat to hold the batting into place and complete the project.

DINO PILLOW:

NOTE: Pillow finished size - 18" x 20"
  1. Print out pages of dinosaur pillow pattern. Tape together and cut out.
  2. Lay the 2 fabric pieces with right sides together and pin the pattern on top.
  3. Cut out the dinosaur. Remove the pattern, then pin around the edges to keep pieces together.
  4. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the dinosaur. Leave a 5-6" opening along the dinosaur's back to turn.
  5. Clip around the edges and curves of the seam allowance then turn right side out. Press.
  6. Stuff the pillow with polyfil.
  7. Hand stitch the opening closed using an invisible stitch.

OVERALLS:

  1. Use Burda Kids pattern 9337, view A.
  2. Follow along with the instructions listed in the pattern to construct the overalls.

JOANN HACKS:

  • For the playmat, fabric clips will be easier to use than pins in this project since the layers and polyfil are thick.
  • Make yourself a guide to space the petals evenly around the circle before pinning and stitching together. Section the circle off like a 4 or 8 piece pizza using a fabric pen. This will give you quadrants to stay inside.
  • For the dino pillow, use a dowel rod or dull pencil to help push out legs, tail and head of the pillow after turning.
  • It's important to stuff the legs and neck of the dinosaur firmly with polyfil to keep it structured and strong.
  • For the overalls, it will be helpful to have a turning tool or thin wooden dowel to turn the very narrow strip/tube for the straps, although not necessary.
