  13. Follow the diagrams for "FIGHT", "LIKE A", and "GIRL" to make the three separate rows of text for the quilt.
  14. When sewing, be sure to sew with an accurate 1/4" seam allowance.
  15. Press seam allowances to the darker fabric unless the opposite piece has intersecting seam(s). In that case, press away from the piece with intersecting seams even if you have to press toward the light fabric. This will prevent bulk.
  16. Once all three rows of text have been sewn, measure across the middle of each individual row as shown in Sashing Strip Diagram.
  17. Find the average of the 3 measurements.
  18. The measurements should be approximately 38 1/2" but this may vary.
  19. Follow the Sashing Strip Diagrams to see how to cut and sew the sashing strips to the "FIGHT", "LIKE A", "GIRL" rows.
  20. Follow the Border Diagram and to sew the top and bottom borders and to complete the quilt top.
  21. Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. The backing and batting should extend out slightly beyond the edges of the quilt top.
  22. Baste by pinning using quilters safety pins or spray baste.
  23. Quilt as desired.
  24. Sew the (6) 2 1/2" Fabric B strips from the bag labeled "Top/bottom borders binding" together end to end to make the binding for the quilt.
  25. Bind the quilt.

  26. KEY:
    WOF - Width of fabric
RST - Right (or pretty) sides of fabric together
Sashing - Strips of fabric between rows or blocks on a quilt. Can also be referred to as lattice.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When sewing sashing strips to rows of blocks or border strips, a strip may be a slightly different length than the row or quilt. (Because strips were cut to the average size of the row/quilt.) Pin so that the longer of the two is on the bottom. To pin, fold a crease in the center of the row/quilt and a crease in the center of the sashing/border strip. Match the center creases of the strip to the row/quilt to pin at the center. Place a pin on the top and bottom, ease in between to even out any bulk underneath and pin as you go.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Size? What is the final size of the quilt? 3/4 yd backing doesn’t seem big enough.
