DIRECTIONS:

  • Download and print the pattern and diagrams that illustrate the steps shown, click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab.

  • Find directions for other star blocks:

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Cut carefully, checking and re-checking to cut the correct size and amount of pieces. Keep whatever is left over from strips after sub-cutting in case any pieces are missed or lost.
    • When sewing rows and long sashing strips, carefully pin so the vertical sashing strips line up with each other. Also aim for having star centers line up when possible.
    • If sewing a sashing strip to a slightly longer block pin with sashing strip on top, place a pin on the bottom corner to hold corners in place. Pin along the side to help ease the longer fabric to match the top layer.
    • If the sashing strip is longer, pin the same way, but have the sashing strip under the block. Shown in Diagram 2.
    • Sew Blocks & Cut Sashing Strips Together:
    • Arrange blocks in order as shown, or personal preference.
    • Blocks should be arranged in four rows of three blocks with two sashing strips in between as shown in Diagram 2.
    • Pin and sew blocks and sashing strips together using a 1/4" seam allowance.
    • Press seam allowances toward the sashing strip.

    1. Cutting Fabric Pieces for all 12 blocks:

      • Cut fabric into width of fabric strips (width of fabric), and sub-cut squares and/or rectangles listed.
      • Sort pieces according to color and size.
      • Complete each of the 12 blocks, using the link above for individual star instructions.
      • Cutting Fabric Strips for Sashing and Borders:
      • Cut fabric into width of fabric strips (width of fabric) as shown on chart.
      • Measuring Blocks for Sashing Strip Size: _x000B_Use three 2 1/2" Fabric A strips.
      • Measure each of the quilt blocks to determine the average size. _x000B_(Note: Size of blocks size can vary in measurement.)
      • Write down the size of each block to determine the average size.
      • When figuring out the average size, if in doubt, go towards a smaller size because blocks can usually be stretched a little to fit the sashing strip.
      • Once an average block size has been determined, sub-cut eight 2 1/2"x average block size sashing strips.

    2. Sew Rows & Long Sashing Strips Together:

      • Use three 2 1/2" Fabric A strips.
      • Measure from left to right on each of the four rows of blocks/sashing strips sewn to determine average length for long sashing strips to be cut. _x000B_Trim 2 1/2" strips to the average row measurement.
      • Pin and sew rows and sashing strips together using a 1/4" seam allowance._x000B_Follow the HACK for pinning and easing (longer piece should always be underneath and pin to ease).
      • Press seam allowance toward sashing.

    3. Sew First Border to Rows:

      • Use five 2 1/2" Fabric A strips.
      • Sew the five strips together end to end.
      • Press seam allowances open.
      • Measure the length of the quilt from top to bottom and down the center. _x000B_Trim two strips from the continuous strip to the average length measurement of the quilt.
      • Pin and sew trimmed strips to the left and right sides of the quilt as shown in Diagram.
      • Press seam allowances toward border strips.
      • Repeat measuring and sewing.
      • Measure the width of the quilt from left to right across the top, center and bottom. _x000B_Trim two strips from the continuous strip to the average width measurement of the quilt.
      • Pin and sew trimmed strips to the top and bottom sides of the quilt as shown in Diagram 4.
      • Press seam allowances toward border strips.

    4. Sew Remaining Border Strips to Quilt:

      • Use seven 1 1/2" Fabric B strips and seven 5 1/2" Fabric A strips.
      • Sew all Fabric B strips together end to end.
      • Press seam allowances open.
      • Put aside.
      • Use seven 5 1/2" Fabric B strips and seven 5 1/2" Fabric A strips.
      • Sew all Fabric B strips together end to end.
      • Press seam allowances open.
      • Put aside.
      • Follow the same technique to measure, trim strip to average size, sew and press toward borders in order shown in Diagram 5.

    5. Quilt:

      • Cut backing fabric in half.
      • Trim away selvages on one side of each half.
      • Sew half sides together selvage edge to edge to yield a piece large enough for backing.
      • Press seam allowance toward one side.
      • Sandwich backing, batting and quilt top. The backing and batting should extend out slightly beyond the edges of the quilt top.
      • Baste by pinning using quilter's safety pins or spray baste.
      • Quilt as desired with a stitch length set at 3.
      • Use a walking foot on machine if possible.

    6. Bind the Quilt:

      • Use the seven 2 1/2" Fabric D strips.
      • Sew strips end to end by laying them in an L shape with right sides together and stitching a diagonal line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the overlapping section.
      • Press seams open.
      • Fold binding strip in half lengthwise wrong sides together and press.
      • To attach binding to quilt, line up the raw edges of the edge of the quilt with the raw edges of the binding.
      • Leave about a 5" tail before beginning to sew.
      • After stitching around the perimeter of the quilt, excess binding can be tucked into the 5" opening and stitched over to finish.
      • Fold the binding around to the back and hand sew an invisible stitch around the quilt.
      • If machine finishing is preferred, start out be machine stitching binding to the back of the quilt instead of the front.
      • Fold binding to the front of the quilt and machine stitch with a slightly larger stitch length of 3, or a zig-zag stitch.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Yardage is missing from the directions! The directions seem easy to follow, but has left out the yardage of each color needed to make this beautiful quilt.
