Walking Star Quilt Block

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
  • Lead pencil & white pencil
  • Straight quilter's pins
  • Stitch ripper
  • Rotary cutter
  • 18"x 24" cutting mat
  • 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
  • Iron & pressing surface
  • Sewing machine
  • Three sandwich-size plastic bags

  • MEASUREMENTS: Approx. size of block is 12 1/2" (approx. finished size of quilt is 12"x 12")

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Sewing in the direction arrows indicate in diagram will help to prevent fabric from bunching at the beginning of the seam.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:

      • Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Half Square Triangle Bag and Flying Geese Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated._x000B_

        • Fabric A:
          • Two 4 1/8" squares (Half Square Triangle Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2"x 6 1/2" rectangles (Flying Geese Bag)
        • Fabric B:
          • Two 4 1/8" Squares (Half Square Triangle Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2" Squares (Flying Geese Bag)
        • Fabric D:
          • Four 4 1/8" Squares (Half Square Triangle Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2" Squares (Flying Geese Bag)
        • Note: Fabrics C and E will not be used on this block.

    2. Sew Half Square Triangle Units:

      • Use pieces from Half Square Triangle Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 1, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 4 1/8" Fabric D squares. Set two aside.
      • Pair two of the marked Fabric D squares with two Fabric A squares._x000B_Pin pieces right sides together so the corners match exactly.
      • Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
      • Cut along the drawn line on both pairs to yield a total of four Fabric A/D half square triangle units.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric D.
      • Do not snip off extending corner points.
      • Trim the four half square triangle units to measure 3 1/2".
      • Put units aside.
      • Use the remaining two marked Fabric D squares and the two 4 1/8" Fabric B squares to sew and trim four Fabric B/D half square triangle units in the same manner.

    3. Sew Pinwheel Center:

      • Refer to Diagram 2, following the steps below.
      • Pin and sew the B/D half square triangle units together in two sets of two._x000B_Press seam allowances toward Fabric B.
      • Pin and sew the pairs together._x000B_Press seam allowance toward Fabric B.
      • Block should measure approximately 6 1/2".
      • Put block aside.

    4. Sew Flying Geese Units:

      • Use pieces from the Flying Geese Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 3, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 3 1/2" Fabric B and D squares.
      • Pin one of the marked Fabric B squares over the left side of a 3 1/2"x 6 1/2" Fabric A rectangle right sides together with edges lined up.
      • Carefully sew directly on the drawn line.
      • To check corner edges, fold outside corner of Fabric B towards seam and fold opposite corner over to cover Fabric A._x000B_If Fabric B and A corners do not line up, or if they are more than slightly off, re-sew.
      • When corners line up, fold back over so seam is exposed and trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric B.
      • Sew a 3 1/2" Fabric D square to the opposite side of the rectangle in the same manner.
      • Check corners and press seam allowance toward Fabric D.
      • Repeat to make a total of four Flying Geese units in the same manner.

    5. Complete the Walking Star Block:

      • Arrange the A/D half square triangles, Pinwheel Center and Flying Geese units as shown in Diagram 4 on the pattern._x000B_Pin units in place.
      • Sew into rows and press as arrows indicate.
      • Arrange rows as shown in Diagram 5 on the pattern._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew rows together and press as arrows indicate to complete the Walking Star block.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
