Rising Star Quilt Block

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
  • Lead pencil & white pencil
  • Straight quilter's pins
  • Stitch ripper
  • Rotary cutter
  • 18"x 24" cutting mat
  • 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
  • Iron & pressing surface
  • Sewing machine
  • Three sandwich-size plastic bags

  • MEASUREMENTS: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12"x 12")

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Remember to check that pieces are lined up and pined carefully so units will fit together.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:

      • Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Center Star Bag, Flying Geese, Finishing Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated.

        • _x000B_Fabric A:
          • Four 2" squares (Four in Center Star Bag)
          • Four 2"x 3 1/2" rectangles (Center Star Bag)
          • One 7 1/4" square (Flying Geese Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2" squares (Finishing Bag)
        • Fabric E:
          • One 3 1/2" square (Center Square Bag)
          • Eight 2" squares (Center Square Bag)
          • Four 3 7/8" squares (Flying Geese Bag)
          • _x000B_NOTE: Fabrics B, C and D will not be used on this block.

    2. Making Small Flying Geese units for Center Star:

      • Use eight 2"x 3 1/2" Fabric A rectangles and eight 2" Fabric E squares from Center Star Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 1.
      • Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of the eight 2" Fabric E squares.
      • Refer to Diagram 1, following the steps below.
      • Pin one of the marked Fabric E squares over the left side of a 2 1/2"x 3 1/2" Fabric A rectangle right sides together with edges lined up.
      • Carefully sew directly on the drawn line.
      • To check corner edges, fold outside corner of Fabric E towards seam and fold opposite corner over to cover Fabric A._x000B_If Fabric D and A corners do not line up, or if they are more than slightly off, re-sew.
      • When corners line up, fold back over so seam is exposed and trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric E.
      • Sew a 2" Fabric E square to the opposite side of the rectangle in the same manner.
      • Check corners and press seam allowance toward Fabric E.
      • Repeat to make a total of four Fabric A/E Flying Geese units in the same manner.

    3. Sew the Center Star:

      • Use remaining pieces from Center Star Bag.
      • Refer to Diagrams 2 & 3, following steps below.
      • Use one 3 1/2" Fabric E square, four 2" Fabric A squares, and the Fabric A/E Flying Geese units from Center Star Bag.
      • Arrange as shown in Diagram 2._x000B_Pin and sew into rows and press as indicated by arrows.
      • Sew rows together as shown in Diagram 3 and press as indicated by arrows.
      • Put block aside.

    4. Sew Flying Geese Units:

      • Use pieces from the Flying Geese Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 4, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 3 7/8" Fabric E squares.
      • Pin two of the marked Fabric E squares over opposite corners of one of the two 7 1/4" Fabric A squares, right sides together, making sure corners line up and that the drawn lines overlap.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn lines.
      • Cut apart on the line to make two separate units.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric E.
      • Snip off extending corner points.
      • Pin a marked 3 7/8" Fabric E squares to the remaining corner on each of the two sewn units.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric E.
      • Snip off extending corner points._x000B_This will yield four 3 1/2"x 6 1/2" A/E Flying Geese units.
      • Put aside.

    5. Complete the Rising Star Block:

      • Use 3 1/2" Fabric A squares from Finishing Block Bag and all sewn units.
      • Arrange the Flying Geese units, Center Star and the four 3 1/2" Fabric A squares in rows as shown in Diagram 5 on the pattern._x000B_Pin units in place, sew into rows and press as arrows indicate.
      • Arrange rows as shown in Diagram 6 on the pattern._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew rows together and press as arrows indicate to complete the Rising Star block.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
