Mother’s Star Quilt Block

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
  • Lead pencil & white pencil
  • Straight quilter's pins
  • Stitch ripper
  • Rotary cutter
  • 18"x 24" cutting mat
  • 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
  • Iron & pressing surface
  • Sewing machine
  • Three sandwich-size plastic bags

  • MEASUREMENTS: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12"x 12")

    • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Remember to check that pieces are lined up and pinned carefully so units will fit together.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:

      • Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Half Square Triangle Bag, Flying Geese Bag, Finishing Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated._x000B_

          • Fabric A:
          • Two 4 7/8" squares (Half Square Triangle)_x000B_Two 5 1/4"squares (Flying Geese Bag)
          li>Fabric B:
          • Four 2 7/8" squares (Flying Geese Bag)
          • Fabric C:_x000B_Two 4 7/8" squares (Half Square Triangle Bag)
        • Fabric D
          • Four 2 1/2" squares (Half Square Triangle Bag)
          • One 4 1/2" square (Finishing Bag)
        • Fabric E:
          • Four 2 7/8" squares (Flying Geese Bag)

    2. Sew Fabric Half Square Triangle Units:

      • Use pieces from the Half Square Triangle Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 1, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 4 7/8" Fabric A squares.
      • Pair the two Fabric A squares with the two 4 7/8" Fabric C squares._x000B_Pin pieces right sides together so the corners match exactly.
      • Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
      • Cut along the drawn line on both pairs to yield a total of four Fabric A/C half square triangle units.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric A as shown on diagram.
      • Snip off extending corner points.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 2 1/2" Fabric D squares.
      • Pin a marked Fabric D square over the Fabric C corner of the half square triangle unit, right sides together, with the line in the same direction as in the diagram.
      • Corner edges should line up perfectly.
      • Sew directly over the line on each unit.
      • Check to see that corner edges lines up.
      • When corners line up, fold back over so seam is exposed and trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric A.
      • Put units aside.

    3. Sew Flying Geese Units:

      • Use pieces from the Flying Geese Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 2, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four 2 7/8" Fabric B squares.
      • Pin two of the marked Fabric B squares over opposite corners of one of the two 5 1/4" Fabric A squares, right sides together, making sure corners line up and that the drawn lines overlap.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn lines.
      • Cut apart on the line to make two separate units.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric B.
      • Snip off extending corner points.
      • Pin a marked 2 7/8" Fabric B squares to the remaining corner on each of the two sewn units.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric B.
      • Snip off extending corner points._x000B_This will yield four 2 1/2"x 4 1/2" A/B Flying Geese units.
      • Put units aside.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Four 2 7/8" Fabric E squares.
      • Using the remaining 5 1/4" square and the marked Fabric E squares, refer to Diagram 3 to sew four 2 1/2"x 4 1/2" A/E Flying Geese units in the same manner.
      • Sew the E/A and B/A Flying Geese units together as shown in Diagram 4._x000B_Press seam allowance toward the A/B units.

      Complete the Mother's Star Block:

      • Arrange the 4 1/2" Fabric D squares from Finishing Bag with Flying Geese and half square triangle units as shown in Diagram 5.
      • Pin units in place and sew into rows.
      • Press seam allowances as arrows indicate._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew together and press as arrows indicate in Diagram 6 to complete the Mother's Star block.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
