SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
- Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
- Lead pencil & white pencil
- Straight quilter's pins
- Stitch ripper
- Rotary cutter
- 18"x 24" cutting mat
- 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
- Iron & pressing surface
- Sewing machine
- Two sandwich-size plastic bags
- MEASUREMENTS: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12"x 12")

JOANN HACKS:
- Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
- Remember to check that pieces are lined up and pined carefully so units will fit together.
Organizing Fabric Pieces:
- Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
- Square in a Square Bag, Quarter Square Triangle Bag
- Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated.
- _x000B_Fabric A:
- Twenty 2 1/2" squares (Square in a Square Bag)
- Two 5 1/2" squares (Quarter Square Triangle Bag)
- Fabric B:
- Four 4 1/2" squares (Square in a Square Bag)
- Fabric C:
- One 4 1/2" square (Square in a Square Bag)
- Fabric D:
- Two 5 1/2" squares (Quarter Square Triangle Bag)_x000B_NOTE: Fabric E will not be used on this block.
Sew Square in a Square Units:
- Use pieces from the Square in a Square bag.
- Refer to Diagram 1, following the steps below.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the twenty 2 1/2" Fabric A squares.
- Pin two of the marked Fabric A squares on opposite corners of the 4 1/2" Fabric B square, wrong sides together, making sure corners match exactly.
- Carefully sew over the drawn lines.
- To check corner edges, fold outside corner of Fabric A towards seam and fold opposite corner over to cover Fabric B._x000B_If Fabric E and B corners do not line up, or if they are more than slightly off, re-sew.
- Check the opposite Fabric A square in the same manner.
- When corners line up, fold back over so seam is exposed and trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
- Press seam allowances toward Fabric A.
- Sew a Fabric A square to the two unsewn corners in the same manner.
- Press seam allowance toward Fabric A.
- Sew four Fabric A/B 4 1/2" Squares in a Square units.
- Sew one Fabric A/C 4 1/2" Squares in a Square unit in the same manner.
- Put the unit aside.
Sew Quarter Square Triangle Units:
- Use pieces from the Quarter Square Triangle Bag.
- Refer to Diagram 2, following the steps below.
- Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of two 5 1/2" Fabric A squares.
- Pair the two 5 1/2" Fabric A and D squares._x000B_Pin pieces right sides together so the corners match exactly.
- Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
- Cut along the drawn line on both pairs to yield a total of four Fabric A/D half square triangle units.
- Press seam allowances toward Fabric D.
- Do not snip off extending corner points.
- Draw a diagonal line down the wrong side of two Fabric A/D half square triangle units as shown in Diagram 3.
- Pair the marked and unmarked units right sides together with Fabric A against Fabric D.
- Pin in place with seams lined up.
- Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn line.
- Cut along the drawn line on both pairs to yield a total of four Fabric A/D quarter square triangle units.
- Press seam allowances as shown in Diagram 3.
- Trim the four half square triangle units to measure 4 1/2".
Complete the Kansas Star Block:
- Arrange the Square in a Square and Quarter Square Triangle units as shown in Diagram 4 on the pattern._x000B_ Pin units in place.
- Sew into rows and press as arrows indicate.
- Arrange rows as shown in Diagram 5 on the pattern._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew rows together and press as arrows indicate to complete the Kansas Star block.
- Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
