  • 1/2 yard cotton for lining
  • 1 yard Pellon® 931TD fusible mid-weight interfacing
  • 1 pkg Pellon® 102 R-M Matte Vinyl Fuse
  • 9" and 12" polyester zipper

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cutting directions for large bag (small bag in parentheses):

  2. Main Fabric and Interfacing: Cut two 11 1/2"x 14 1/2" (8 1/2"x 6 1/2")

  3. Main Fabric Strap: Cut one 4"x 15" (4"x 12")

  4. Strap Interfacing: Cut one 2"x 15" (2"x 12")

  5. Lining and Fusible Vinyl: Cut two 12"x 15" (9"x 7")

  6. Construction: Use 14/90 universal needle, 3.0 mm stitch length and 1/4" seams.

  7. Fuse vinyl to RIGHT side of lining fabric according to package directions and trim to 11 1/2"x 14 1/2" (8 1/2"x 6 1/2").

  8. Fuse interfacing to WRONG side of main fabric.

  9. Place zipper facedown on right side of 11 1/2" (8 1/2") side of main fabric. The bottom stop of zipper will be just off fabric. Overcast tab end of zipper together just below the metal stops. Metal parts will be cut off after sewing. Sew 1/8" from edge. Place vinyl lining right side down over zipper. Hold in place with wonder clips. Sew 1/4" from edge, using zipper foot and moving tab as necessary. Flip back lining and edge stitch lining to zipper tape, 1/8" from fold. Repeat on other side of zipper with remaining bag pieces.

  10. Fuse strap interfacing to center of strap. Press in one short end 1/2". Press in half lengthwise. Fold raw edges to center and press forming a 1" strap. Sew 1/8" from sides on long edges and folded end.

  11. Open zipper halfway. Fold bag, matching right sides of main fabric and lining. Insert strap into zipper tab side of main fabric, 1/2" below zipper and having raw edges even. Sew twice 1/8" from edge to reinforce. Fold strap out of the way inside bag. Clip other edges of bag together, folding ends of zipper tape together. Sew outer edges in a 1/4" seam leaving a 5"-6" opening at bottom of lining side. Sew SLOWLY over zipper tape area. Trim excess zipper tape.

  12. Trim corners. Reach through lining opening and pull bag through the open zipper. Push out corners of bag. Fold edges of lining opening to inside, clip and stitch close to edge. Push lining into bag and smooth (lining will be stiff).

  13. Mark snap placement 3/4" from ends of strap. Insert socket portion of snap at end of wrist strap and stud portion near bag.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When working with fusible vinyl, avoid pins, small stitches and hot irons. Instead use wonder clips, a 3.0 mm stitch length and always use the protective paper to iron.

  • If outer bag needs pressing, iron before pushing lining into bag.

  • Other strap fasteners may be used such as sew-on snaps, metal snaps or velcro.

  • When sewing over heavy zipper tape areas, sew slowly or hand turn the wheel. Choose polyester zippers instead of those with metal teeth.
