- Matte acrylic paint
- Variety of glass, plastic or ceramic vases
- Mixing cups
- Popsicle sticks
- Paintbrushes
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Dropcloth or old newspapers
- Sandpaper
DIRECTIONS:
- Gently sandpaper gloss vases to roughen up the surface.
- To make the terracotta paint mixture combine 1/2 cup of water, 10 tsp of baking soda, and at least 6oz of acrylic paint. The consistency of the paint mixture should be similar to a watery cake batter.
- Paint vases in multiple layers of the paint mixture, letting them dry thoroughly between coats. Start with thinner layers of paint mixture for the first several coats; heavier paint layers are ideal for the final coats.
- Dry overnight and display.
Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:
- Paint mixture dries darker. Test color before painting entire vase.
- Handle finished pieces with care. The faux terracotta paint mixture chips easily. The good news is that this is such an easy upcycle project: they can be touched up anytime. Save extra paint mixture in an airtight container.
- Use matte Mod Podge or sprayable artist fixative to affix terracotta finish. Test first because these products will diminish the matte look.
