Tulip Star Quilt Block

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cut pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or tan cotton sewing machine thread
  • Lead pencil & white pencil
  • Straight quilter's pins
  • Stitch ripper
  • Rotary cutter
  • 18"x 24" cutting mat
  • 6"x 24" plastic ruler for rotary cutting, other sizes optional
  • Iron & pressing surface
  • Sewing machine
  • Three sandwich-size plastic bags

  • MEASUREMENTS: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12"x 12")

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Remember to check that pieces are lined up and pined carefully so units will fit together.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:

      • Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Star in a Center Star Bag, Tulip Bag, Finishing Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated.

        • _x000B_Fabric A:
          • Twenty 2" squares (Four in Center Star Bag) (Sixteen in Tulip Bag)
          • Four 2"x 3 1/2" rectangles (Tulip Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2" squares (Finishing Bag)
        • Fabric B:
          • Eight 2" squares (Center Star Bag)
        • Fabric D:
          • Four 2"x 3 1/2" rectangles (Center Star Bag)
          • Eight 2" squares (Tulip Bag)
          • Four 2"x 6 1/2" rectangles (Tulip Bag)
        • _x000B_NOTE: Fabric C will not be used on this block.

    2. Marking Squares for Center Star and Tulip Units:

      • Refer to Diagram 1, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of:
        • Eight 2" Fabric A squares from Tulip Bag, place back in bag after marking.
        • Eight 2" Fabric B squares from Center Star Bag, place back in bag after marking.
        • Eight 2" Fabric D squares from Tulip Bag, place back in bag after marking.

    3. Sewing Flying Geese Units For Center Star Unit:

      • Refer to Diagram 2, following the steps below.
      • Use marked 2" Fabric B squares and 2"x 3 1/2" Fabric D rectangles from Center Square Bag.
      • Pin one of the marked Fabric B squares over the left side of a 2 1/2"x 3 1/2" Fabric D rectangle right sides together with edges lined up.
      • Carefully sew directly on the drawn line.
      • To check corner edges, fold outside corner of Fabric B towards seam and fold opposite corner over to cover Fabric D._x000B_If Fabric B and D corners do not line up, or if they are more than slightly off, re-sew.
      • When corners line up, fold back over so seam is exposed and trim leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric B.
      • Sew a 2" Fabric B square to the opposite side of the rectangle in the same manner.
      • Check corners and press seam allowance toward Fabric B.
      • Repeat to make a total of four Fabric D/B Flying Geese units in the same manner._x000B_Place back in Center Star Bag.

    4. Sewing Flying Geese Units For Tulip Units:

      • Use marked 2" Fabric D squares and 2"x 3 1/2" Fabric A rectangles from Tulip Bag.
      • Sew in the same manner as Fabric A/D Center Star Flying geese, using Diagram 3 as a guide._x000B_Place back in Tulip Bag.

    5. Sewing Wide Flying Geese Units For Tulip Units:

      • Use marked 2" Fabric A squares and 2"x 6 1/2" Fabric D rectangles from Tulip Bag.
      • Sew in the same manner as Center Star Flying geese, using Diagram 4 as a guide._x000B_ Place back in Tulip Bag.

    6. Sew the Center Star:

      • Refer to Diagram 5 & 6, following steps below.
      • Use 3 1/2" Fabric E square, four 2" Fabric A squares, and the Fabric D/B Flying Geese units from Center Star Bag.
      • Arrange as shown in Diagram 5._x000B_Pin and sew into rows and press as indicated by arrows.
      • Sew rows together as shown in Diagram 6 and press as indicated by arrows.
      • Put block aside.

    7. Sewing Tulip Units:

      • Refer to Diagram 7 & 8, following the steps below.
      • Use eight 2" unmarked Fabric A squares and four Fabric A/D Flying Geese units from Tulip Bag.
      • Arrange as shown in Diagram 7._x000B_Pin and sew into rows and press as indicated by arrows.
      • Sew rows together as shown in Diagram 8 and press as indicated by arrows to yield four Tulip units.

    8. Complete the Tulip Star Block:

      • Arrange the 3 1/2" Fabric A squares from Finishing Bag with Center Star and Tulip units as shown in Diagram 9.
      • Pin units in place and sew into rows.
      • Press seam allowances as arrows indicate._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew rows together and press as arrows indicate in Diagram 10 to complete the Tulip Star block.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
