There are better quality rock dig kits available than this one.
My kids enjoy any kind of rock, mineral or fossil dig kits. This kit is not the best quality and the rocks included are small or of poor quality. The included digging tools are cheap so my kids ended up using the digging tools from other kits. I would recommend looking at any National Geographic dig kits or Thames & Kosmos over this brand.

Fun and kids love them
This is a great gift for my young grandchildren. They enjoy all of the Smithsonian science kits. We gave them for gifts and the parents called asking where we got them.

This kit rocks!
My 6 year old grandson loved it! We did have to use another wooden hammer & metal chisel to really get anywhere with it. The wood hammer included has absolutely no weight to it & the wood chisel was like using a toothpick- it made no difference when struck. Once we upgraded the tool selection for excavation it was fun to see what was unearthed. It still took a lot of time & he still has half of it to go. He enjoyed finding the treasure rocks inside & was excited to show his mom shen she arrived to pick him up. We plan to get another Smithsonian kit soon!

Not worth the price.
Not worth the price. Only a few small crystals. I could have bought more and bigger ones for same price. Also my daughter thought adding water would help break it up faster. DO NOT DO: it made a huge mess and clogged my sink.
