SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/4yds cotton canvas
  • Coordinating cotton thread
  • Straight pins
  • Rotary cutter
  • Self-healing mat
  • Acrylic ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Chalk

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To get your sewing machine cover dimensions, measure the length of your machine and add 1". Next, measure the height of your machine and double. Then add the width of your machine to that amount. My machine measures 15" wide and 12" high, with a width of about 6" so my cover measurement will be 16" wide and 30" long. Cut two of these.
  2. Cut four rectangles for your side pieces that measure the height of your sewing machine and 1/2" wider than the width of your machine. Mine measured 12" high and 6 1/2" wide. Round off the top two corners of each side piece using a cotton spool or something similar as your template. Ensure all of your top corners are even.
  3. Cut two side pockets that measure 8" tall and as wide as your side piece. Mine measure 7"x 8". For each pocket, fold one short edge back 1/4" and back again 1/2". Press flat and edge stitch.
  4. Place your two large pieces on top of each other with right sides facing and pin. Lay it over your machine and mark with chalk where your handle base will need to go. Mark a rounded rectangular shape about 1/4" wider than the width and length of your handle. Stitch another 1/4" outside of that rectangular marking and cut the inside out around the marking. Push the top fabric down through the rectangular hole to turn right side out. Press the seam flat and match up edges again. Pin together and stitch around the perimeter. Remove pins.
  5. Place two of the side panels on top of each other with wrong sides facing and match corners. Pin together. Pin the hemmed pocket on top so that the bottoms are flush. Stitch around the perimeter with 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat with other side panel and pocket.
  6. Pin the center of the top of one side panel to the center of one long side of your large panel with wrong sides facing. Pin these pieces generously all the way around the corned corners and down each side of your side panel. Stitch them together with a 1/4" seam allowance, adjusting your way around the rounded corners. Remove pins. Repeat with other side panel. Trim edges.
  7. Turn entire piece wrong side out and push seams out. Press and create a French seam by pinning the seams together again and stitching over the raw edges. Turn right side out, push seams out, and press for finished look. Even up the open edges of your sewing machine cover along the base.
  8. Add binding to the base and overlap the ends near the back of your machine cover so it won't be seen.
