SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Flannel fabric for front of blanket (1/2 yard)
  • Coordinating flannel fabric for back of blanket (1 yd)
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut front of blanket 15"x 15" square.
  2. Cut back of blanket 25"x 25" square.
  3. Mark the center on each edge of both squares.
  4. Make a mark in each corner 1/4" in from each edge of front blanket piece.

  5. Match small and large square right sides together, matching the center of each side. Pin along all sides of the small square up to the mark in the corner. There will be excess from the large square at each corner.

  6. Stitch along the edges using 1/4" seam allowance. Stop and start at each corner at mark.
  7. Leave a 4" opening on one side to turn blanket right side out.

  8. To make mitered corners, pull the center fabric away from the outside fabric matching up raw outside edges to create a triangle. Fold the center fabric in half diagonally on itself, matching seams. This should create a triangle next to the triangle flap. Sew from edge of center fabric to edge of outer binding fabric and trim to 1/4". Continue with all corners.

  9. Flatten and press new corner seam open, then press all "binding" fabric toward center fabric so that it will lie flat when turned.
  10. Turn blanket right side out and press.

  11. Topstitch 1/4" from edge on center fabric closing the opening in the process. Topstitch 1/4" from edge of blanket.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unclear Instructions Between the video and the instructions there is little said about how to match seams to sew. The video shows seams already pinned and then sewn and is very misleading.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Instructions Wished I had read the reviews before I started this project. Thankfully, I too found the video on YouTube - DIY Self Binding Baby Blanket and was able to complete this. Seems like some of the instructions are missing or poorly thought out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I'm confused Is this a baby doll blanket? If the fabric for the front is 15" x 15" I don't think this would big enough for a doll so I'm wondering if i'm missing something??

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I figured it out I saw this pattern in the February ad, and thought it would be fun to try! I am a beginner sewist and a want to advance my skills. As the other reviews stated, this isn't the easiest instruction to follow. I read through it a few times and decided that since I'm a visual learner, and was feeling too lazy to search YouTube, I would use scraps to figure it out. I used a 3"x3" square and a 5"x5" square of quilting cotton. Except for the inside corners, I figured it out just fine. I think because it was such a small scale, it was more difficult. I am going to buy some cute flannel while it's still on sale and try it as recommended in the instruction! It would be better with pictures, but it's a free pattern, so I don't expect much. Thanks!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pictures Needed The instructions are confusing. Thank you very much for the idea though! Went to YouTube and searched for this type of project and found a great free video tutorial. I appreciate my local JoAnn's and will be in soon for fabric so I can make some of these!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs pictures for instructions I read the low reviews on this and then read the instructions. Now I understand why the low reviews. Instructions are not clear. If you want to know how to do this I’ve seen a really good YouTube video on how to make one very similar
