SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Satin - 1/4 yard
  • Sherpa - 6"x 10"
  • 1/2" Elastic - 15 1/2"
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin
  • Sewing clips (optional), or straight pins
  • Chalk
  • Sewing machine and matching thread

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use Eye Mask Template to cut one satin eye mask piece, and one sherpa eye mask piece.

  2. Face satin and sherpa eye mask pieces right sides together and secure with sewing clips. You can also use straight pins; be sure to only pin within the seam allowance so that the puncture will not show in the final piece.

  3. Mark a 1/2" space with chalk on either side of the mask where the straps will go. Double check that they’re even with each other.

  4. Mark a 2" space with chalk on the flattest part of the mask - top center.

  5. Set eye mask aside.

  6. Cut one 1 5/8"x 24" strip of satin.

  7. Fold the long satin strip in half, long side to long side, and clip together with sewing clips (or straight pins on the seam allowance.) Before clipping one end together, attach the safety pin to the inside of the rectangle, then secure it with a sewing clip.

  8. Sew down the long raw edge of the satin strip with a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave the short edges open.

  9. Flip the satin tube right side out by using the safety pin on one end to push the tube edge up and out the other side.

  10. Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic and pull it through the satin tube. When the other edge of the elastic meets the satin tube, pin in through the edge of the satin so that it does not get pulled inside the tube.

  11. The satin will begin to bunch up around the elastic; distribute the bunching evenly down the elastic.

  12. Place the ends of the elastic tube in between the sandwiched satin and sherpa eye mask layers. Let the excess elastic hang out of the 2" opening in the eye mask, and navigate the ends to either side and line them up with the strap chalk markings. Double check that the elastic did not get twisted or tangled in the process before securing the elastic straps into place with sewing clips. Sew all the way around the eye mask with 3/8" seam allowance, being sure to leave the 2" opening at top.

  13. With sharp scissors, snip little triangles every 1/4" around the curved seams, being careful not to cut through the stitching.

  14. Turn eye mask right side out through the opening. Use point turner, bone folder, or just something like the long handle of a (clean) paintbrush to push out any edges.

  15. Fold top opening in and secure with a sewing clip. Topstitch all the way around the satin eye mask, securing the 2" opening along the way.
