SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Purple fabric dye
  • Tie dye basic supplies
  • 1/4 yd 100% cotton fabric
  • Two 10" pieces of 1/4" elastic
  • Pattern template (download PDF)
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Tie dye cotton fabric purple. Let dry completely.
  2. Iron dried fabric.
  3. Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF" below Print Description for this project.
  4. Cut four pieces of pattern out of fabric (cut 2 together, twice).
  5. Cut two 10" pieces of 1/4" elastic.
  6. Match pieces right sides together, and sew the outer curve using 3/8" seam allowance. Repeat with remaining two pieces of fabric.
  7. Open pieces and press both seam allowances to the right.
  8. Topstitch the center seam to stitch down the seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam.
  9. Lay one half of the mask down with the right side facing up. Place one piece of elastic across the fabric 3/4" down from top corners, making sure not to twist elastic. Lay second piece of elastic across fabric 3/4" up from bottom corners. Pin in place.
  10. Match front and back pieces right sides together, matching center front seams at the top and bottom.
  11. Pin and sew around the exterior of the mask, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the mask between the center front seam and corner.
  12. Clip across corners, and clip curves taking care not to cut through the stitching.
  13. Turn mask right side out and press.
  14. Topstitch around the mask 1/4" from the edge, closing the hole at the bottom in the process.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never fits right I have tried sewing many, many masks with the pattern. The bottom of the mask never fits anybody. It's like it's too small and when they talk, the mask pulls down of the nose. I make a lot of masks and this pattern is the only problem pattern I use. I don't know why I just tried it again. Also, the length of 10" on the elastic is too much. But I can use beads to take up the slack. That didn't even matter because no one I've tried them on can talk and keep them over their nose at the same time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easiest than most I like the space for the mouth and the lowered edge under my eyes. No pleating so I found it easier than other masks that I’ve made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Size of elastic for adults vs. children? I am confused on how much elastic to use for an adult mask vs. a child? Am I missing something?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tie Dye Material For those that don't know what tie dye is should just Google. These have been around since the hippie days of the 70's. It can be done with just white material rolled up. Various colors. The mask pattern is one if these best out there. I've made several different types. No cotton masks are approved for medical personnel. The tie dye masks are the most requested right now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice non-medical mask The only thing I did was add interfacing to one side of the fabric to make it a bit thicker. Overall, a nice easy pattern.
