SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 7" x 72" strips of fabric in rainbow colors, 14 (you will need two of each of the seven colors for each side of the flag)
  • Cutting board & rotary cutter
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Iron 7 ironing board

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut out all 14 of the 7" x 72" strips for the front and back of the flag.
  2. Sew the front seven strips together in the correct color order using a 1/2" seam allowance: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
  3. Press the seams open.
  4. Repeat with the back 7 strips.
  5. Press the seams open.
  6. Place the right sides of the flag together and pin in place. Line up the pressed open seams to ensure the colors meet in the correct place.
  7. Sew a 1/2" seam around the entire edge of the flag, making sure to leave a 6" opening for turning.
  8. Snip the corners of the flag before you turn it right side out to help get rid of the bulk.
  9. Turn the flag right side out and press (press in the seams of the opening).
  10. Edge stitch around the perimeter of the flag, ensuring the opening is now sewn shut.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Try to be as precise as possible when cutting and sewing the strips together. This will ensure that you won’t have trouble making it fit when you line up the front and back of the flag to sew together.
  • Use something pointed to press into the corners after you have turned the flag to keep them crisp/sharp.
