Beginner Under 1 Hour
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 8"x 8" colored paper
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Craft stick or ruler (optional)
  • Templates and diagrams (download PDF under "Get Patterns" tab)

DIRECTIONS:
1.     Create basic puppet shape using the following steps.
2.     Start with a square piece of paper, 8 inches X 8 inches.
3.     Fold the paper in half side to side. Open the paper back up and fold in half top to bottom. You should have a “+” shaped fold line through the middle of your paper.
4.     Fold the paper in half corner to corner in both directions so you have “X” shaped fold lines through the middle of your paper.
5.     Turn the paper over. Fold each corner in to meet the center of your paper where all the fold lines meet in the middle. You should now have a smaller square.
6.     Turn the paper over and fold the corners in to meet in the middle. You should now have an even smaller square.
7.     Fold the square in half top to bottom. There will be 4 flaps on the outside of the rectangle, 2 on each side. Slip your fingers into the flaps and pop the puppet open into its 3D shape.
8.     To make a chameleon, cut a strip of red paper .5” X7” for a tongue. Curl tongue around a pen. Glue two quarters of the puppet base together to make the top of the head. Attach eyes with glue. Glue bottom two quarters together to create the bottom of the head. Glue the tongue inside the bottom, with the curled end sticking out.
9.     To make a lion, unfold the paper base and cut and fold each corner using the diagram under the “Get Patterns” tab. Once each corner has been altered, fold the puppet back into shape and glue on eyes.
10.  To make a flower, unfold the paper base and cut each corner to have the petal design as shown in the diagram under the “Get Patterns” tab. Fold the petals forward to add dimension.  Once each corner has been altered, fold the puppet back into shape and glue leaf shapes in place
11.  To make a fish, unfold the paper base and cut the top two corners as shown in the diagram under the “Get Patterns” tab. Cut and fold the bottom two corners as shown in the diagram to form the fish fins. Once each corner has been altered, fold the puppet back into shape and glue on eyes.
12.  To make a frog, unfold the paper base and fold the top two corners as shown in the diagram under the “Get Patterns” tab. Cut and fold the bottom two corners as shown in the diagram to form the frog feet. Once each corner has been altered, fold the puppet back into shape and glue on eyes.
13.  Or use your imagination to create your own creation!
14.  Try adding cut pieces of paper, or add details with markers, glitter, stitckers and pom poms.
15.  Fold your puppet back into shape and glue eyes in place.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Using a craft stick or ruler to crease creates sharper, cleaner folds.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible directions Directions for making animals are very difficult to follow, don't know how you rated this tor a beginner? I agree with all the other reviews on this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Directions need help Everything is (seemingly) fine until you get up to the point of actually making the animals and then it’s like you’re working off a different set of project directions because nothing makes sense. We were trying to make the lion and ended up making a demogorgon somehow?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful The directions for making a fortune teller were great. Then the diagrams for the animals were ridiculous. They made no sense. Huge waste of our time and I now have a disappointed child

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Origami puppets The directions are easy to follow except when it comes to making the fish, frog, lion, flower etc. The diagrams are very confusing. A video or better directions would help.
