SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fabric shears
  • Measuring tape
  • Sharpie®
  • Fabric glue
  • 1.5 yards of fleece in main color
  • 1.5 yards of fleece in lining color

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Fold fabric in half and then in half again so you have a square piece.

  2. The corner with the folds, measure 24". Mark with a sharpie. Move your ruler to different angles and mark at 24" to create an arch. You can also do this with a piece of string to create a continuous line.

  3. From the same folded corner, mark three inches. Create an arch in the same manner.

  4. Cut your small arch and your large arch and unfold so you have a large circle with a smaller circle in the middle. Repeat this same process with the fabric you’ve chosen for the underside.

  5. Lay the two circles on top of each other so they line up. Fold them in half and cut up one edge, this will create the slit of your tree skirt.

  6. Now, cut the ties along the perimeter. Make cuts every inch. How long you cut in will depend on how long you want your fringe to be. I made my fringe 2.5 inches deep.

  7. Once ties are cut around the entire perimeter of the skirt, tie them up. I’ve used the loop through method here so they lay flat. Cut a 1" slit in the center of the tie pieces. Loop the back through the cut twice so that the backing fabric is on the front of the tie. Repeat this step for all the ties.

  8. Once all ties are tied, lay the tree skirt flat. Trim the slit and the top opening so that the fleece lines up nicely. Using fabric glue, glue the two layers together along these openings.

JOANN HACKS:

  • To make sure the ties are even, use a magnet on the side of the sewing shears to mark how deep you want to cut your fringe.
