Fireworks Picnic Arm Knitted Fleece Pillow

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2/3yd each of three solid color fleece fabrics
  • 16"x 16" pillow form
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To prepare the fleece "yarn" fold the fleece in half as it was wrapped on the bolt with the selvedge edges together. Place on the cutting mat. Hold onto the folded edge and fold it almost to the selvedge edge, stopping about 4" from the selvedge edge.
  2. If needed straighten the cut edge. Measure 2" then cut 2" wide strips cutting from the fold stopping about 3" from the selvedge edge.
  3. The original fold will be cut through but the selvedge will not.
  4. Open the fabric up for the next step which is to cut the continual strip length. Starting at one selvedge edge cut the first strip from where the cutting stopped right through the selvedge edge. This will be the start of the 2" wide continual strip needed for the knitting.
  5. Go to the other end of that strip where it is still attached at the selvedge, count over two strips and cut through the selvedge. Trim the corners to make a rounded end. See DIAGRAM 2 in pattern.
  6. Go back to the other selvedge and cut the next pair of strips off and round the corners. Continue back and forth to the end of the fabric making one very long fleece strip. Repeat on the other two fabrics.
  7. For the arm knitting cast on 10 stitches using one color of fleece. Knit six rows.
  8. Tie on another color leaving long tails and knit four rows for the middle row.
  9. Tie on another color leaving long tails and knit ten rows.
  10. Tie on the middle row color leaving long tails and knit four rows.
  11. Tie on first color leaving long tails and knit six rows.
  12. The completed piece measures about 16"x 32".
  13. Cast off.
  14. Use the long tails and leftover fleece "yarn" to join the sides and end encasing the pillow form. Tuck in all loose ends.

Fireworks Picnic Braided Edge Fleece Pillow

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2/3yd printed fleece
  • 2/3yd solid fleece
  • 18"x 18" pillow form
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Scissors
  • Painter’s tape
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut a 22"x 22" square from each piece of fleece.
  2. Stack the two layers with wrong sides together. Pin the layers together securely in the center.
  3. Cut a 2"x 2" square out of each corner of both layers.
  4. Place a strip of painter’s tape across each side of the top fabric square 2" from the raw edge.
  5. Through both layers cut 2" long slits 1" apart along all edges. The painter’s tape makes it easy to see where to stop cutting when making the 2" long slits. Remove the painter’s tape.
  6. Fold both layers of the cut strips in half making them about 1"x 1". Cut a 1/2" slit through the layers at the fold. Repeat on all strips.
  7. Cut the corners from the end of each strip. See DIAGRAM 3 in pattern.
  8. To make the braided edge start near a corner but not at the corner, pick up both layers of a strip and both layers of the strip to the left of it. Poke the left strip through the slit on the right and let go of the right strip. Pick up the next strip to the left and poke it through the strip continuing the looping through around the pillow edge. When you are at the last side slip the pillow form between the layers and continue braiding the edge around closing in the pillow form. To end the last strip cut the slit to the end and use the narrow strips to tie around the beginning strip.
