Intermediate 3-5 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Belt bag pattern
  • Cotton fabric, 1/2yd outer fabric, 1/2yd lining
  • 1/4" thick flexible foam interfacing, 1/2yd
  • 9" all-purpose zipper
  • 1" wide Belting Strap, 1yd
  • Parachute buckle for 1" strap
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Zipper foot

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut out cotton fabric and foam, and trim belting strap, following the Belt Bag Pattern directions.
  2. Baste outer cotton, foam, and linings together on Bag Back and Back Side pieces.
  3. Baste outer cotton and foam together only for Bag Front Top and Back Front Bottom pieces.
  4. If necessary, trim the zipper to fit the width of the Bag Front. (To trim: pull zipper pull down and trim excess zipper from the top.)
  5. Attach a Bag Front Zipper Attachment (the little inch-wide rectangle of cotton) to each short edge of the zipper. Place the little cotton rectangle right side together with the zipper, pin, and sew together about 1/8" from the edge. Press seam open with an iron.
  6. Attach the Bag Front Top to the zipper. Place the Bag Front Top right side down on top of the zipper so that the long straight edge of the Bag Front top is entirely covering the zipper teeth and meets the edge of the zipper tape. Pin in place. Switch your sewing machine presser foot to a zipper foot and sew together, close to the zipper teeth. Press seam open with an iron. Repeat the steps for attaching the Bag Front Bottom to the zipper; this time the Bag Front Bottom, with right side down, will rest over top the Bag Front Top as well as the zipper teeth. Line up the long straight edge of the Bag Front Bottom to the edge of the zipper tape and proceed as before.
  7. Next, attach the Bag Front Top and Bag Front Bottom lining to the other side of the zipper, following the same steps as before. Press seams open, pin, and flip back over to the front. With zipper foot still on, top stitch the cotton edge on both sides of the zipper.
  8. Change the zipper foot back to the presser foot and baste the lining edges to the Bag Front Top and Bottom, all the way around.
  9. Set assembled Bag Front aside.
  10. Assemble the Back Belt Flap and straps - start by basting one cotton piece right side up on a foam piece. Take the cut belting strap and lay it on top of the cotton side of the foam piece. The length of the strap will lie on top of the foam and cotton, the belting edge will hang an inch over the shortest edge of the flap. Pin in place. Next, match the second Back Belt Flap cotton piece right side down over the pinned belting strap. Pin and place and sew around three edges, leaving the side opposite the strap open.
  11. Turn Back Belt Flap right side out and further secure the belting strap in place by topstitching an inch-wide rectangle with an X through the middle on the belting edge.
  12. Repeat for second Back Belt Flap and pin both Flaps onto the Bag Back, raw edge on raw edge, just below the curve of the top edge on both sides. The flaps and the belting straps will be resting on top of the Bag Back.
  13. Position an end of the Bag Side at the bottom of the Back Bag and pin the edge of the Bag Side to the Back Bag (making sure to capture the edges of the Back Belt Flaps.) Begin sewing an inch from the end of the Bag Side and sew the Bag Side all the way around the Back Bag. Stop sewing an inch before the end. Pin ends of the Bag Side together so that the seam will meet the edge of the Back Bag. Sew together and trim the excess material. Then pin the remaining edge of the seamed Bag Side to the Back Bag and sew together.
  14. Open the zipper on the assembled Bag Front. (This is important - it’s how you will turn the bag right side out in the end.)
  15. Pin edges of the assembled Bag Front to the Back Side. (Double check - the Bag Side and Bag Back should still be oriented so that the lining fabric and the previously sewn seam is on the outside and the Back Belt Flaps and belting straps should still be sitting on the inside of the bag.)
  16. Sew all the way around the edge of the assembled Bag Front.
  17. Trim seams to about 1/8" and turn right side out through the open zipper.
  18. Finish the bag by adding the Parachute Buckle to the ends of the belting straps: Loop the strap end through the female side of the buckle, turn end under and stitch into place. On the male side, bring strapping up from bottom through the clip-side hole. Loop strap back down into the last hole. Finish the strap end by turning under 1/4" twice and stitching into place.

Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

  • To achieve smoother rounded corners, clip little triangles into the foam in the seam allowance; be careful not to cut through the stitching.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very confusing instructions I had a very frustrating time with this pattern. If I had printed it out, it would have taken 26 pages with very strange angles to tape together, so I ended up just using the measurements to make my own pattern. But then some of the instructions were very confusing. For example, I had no idea what to do with the "zipper attachment" or why it was needed. I'd recommend trying to find a different fanny pack pattern.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too stiff I used foam interfacing as called for, and found it very hard to work with. Perhaps I was not using it correctly? Seaming multiple layers of foam, going around curves, working in 3D, all too hard. SUGGEST: do NOT use foam on belt extension pieces. And perhaps use batting or a fusible interfacing for a softer effect. I wanted a fanny pack, this turned out like a piece of luggage. Too large and too stiff for me. The instructions were confusing. A few illustrations would have been helpful, especially in assembling the pieces. For example, I don't recall any mention of sewing in the little linings for the zipper extensions, and how to sew the zipper extension only made sense when the front was totally assembled. I ended up with 2 lining pieces left and bare zipper tape showing on the inside of the bag.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Print scale Please leave information to how you need to print out the pattern!! I was frustrated having to print and reprint so many times! For anyone needing to know! Print in poster mode at 400% scale. Once I actually do the project I’ll update my review!
