Martha Washington Star Quilt Block

  • Cut Pieces from the Lucky Star Quilt
  • Gray or Tan Cotton Sewing Machine Thread
  • Lead Pencil & White Pencil
  • Straight Quilters Pins
  • Stich Ripper
  • Rotary Cutter
  • 18"x 24" Cutting Mat
  • 6"x 24" Plastic Ruler for Rotary Cutting (other sizes optional)
  • Iron & Pressing Surface
  • Sewing Machine
  • Three Sandwich Size Plastic Bags

  • SIZE: Approximate size of block is 12 1/2" (approximate finished size on quilt is 12")

  • JOANN HACKS:

    • Sew all seams 1/4" from edge of fabric or drawn line.
    • Pay close attention to the direction the triangles are placed in when sewing units together.

    1. Organizing Fabric Pieces:
      • Label the three sandwich plastic bags as follows:
        • Center Square, Flying Geese Bag, Finishing Pieces Bag
        • Carefully gather the following fabric pieces that were cut from Fabric Cutting Chart and place in the bag indicated._x000B_

        • Fabric A:
          • One 4 1/2" square (Center Square Bag)
          • One 7 1/4" square (Flying Geese Bag)
          • Four 3 1/2" squares (Finishing Bag)
        • Fabric C:
          • Two 3 7/8" Squares (Center Square Bag)
        • Fabric D:
          • One 4 1/2" Square (Center Square Bag)
        • Fabric E:
          • Four 3 7/8" Squares (Flying Geese Bag)
        • _x000B_NOTE: Fabric B will not be used on this block.

    2. Sew Center Square Unit:

      • Use pieces from the Center Square bag.
      • Refer to Diagrams 1 and 2, following the steps below.
      • Cut the Two 4 1/2" Fabric A and D squares in quarters to yield four triangles from each.
      • Cut the Two 4 1/8" Fabric C squares diagonally to yield two triangles from each.
      • Pin and sew the short sides of the Fabric D and A triangles together to make four matching units as shown on Diagram 1.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric D.
      • Sew the Fabric C triangles to the Fabric D/A units.
      • Press seam allowance toward Fabric C.
      • Trim the four units to 4 1/2" squares.
      • Sew units together as shown in Diagram 2.
      • Press as shown.

    3. Sew Flying Geese Units:

      • Use pieces from the Flying Geese Bag.
      • Refer to Diagram 3, following the steps below.
      • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Four 3 7/8" Fabric E squares.
      • Pin two of the marked Fabric E squares over opposite corners of one of the two 7 1/4" Fabric A squares, right sides together, making sure corners line up and that the drawn lines overlap.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn lines.
      • Cut apart on the line to make two separate units.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric E.
      • Snip off extending corner points.
      • Pin a marked 3 7/8" Fabric E squares to the remaining corner on each of the two sewn units.
      • Sew 1/4" from both sides of the line.
      • Press seam allowances toward Fabric E.
      • Snip off extending corner points._x000B_This will yield four 3 1/2"x 6 1/2" A/E Flying Geese units.
      • Put aside.

    4. Complete the Martha Washington Star Block:

      • Use 3 1/2" Fabric A squares from Finishing Block Bag and all sewn units.
      • Arrange the Flying Geese units, Center Star, and the four 3 1/2" Fabric A squares in rows as shown in Diagram 3 on the pattern._x000B_Pin units in place, sew into rows and press as arrows indicate.
      • Arrange rows as shown in Diagram 4 on the pattern._x000B_Pin rows in place, sew rows together and press as arrows indicate to complete the Martha Washington Star block as shown in Diagram 5 of the pattern.
      • Block should measure approximately 12 1/2", but this can vary slightly.
