SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 100% cotton fabric
  • Coordinating 100% cotton fabric
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Pattern template (download PDF)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To create color block, sew together two pieces of coordinating fabric 4" x 12" long using 1/4" seam allowance.
  2. Download pattern. Fold pattern in half from outer corner to center of curved side. Lay fold of pattern piece on the seam of the fabric piece you created. Cut one pattern piece.
  3. Lay cut pattern piece on fabric matching seam line with right sides together to cut second piece making sure you have turned the piece to make color block.
  4. Cut 2 pattern pieces of coordinating fabric for lining.
  5. Cut pieces from coordinating fabric to create bias tape. You will need one piece that is about 42" long and 1" wide.
  6. Use bias tape maker to create 1/4" bias tape or do it yourself by ironing the strap in half, then folding the two sides again to meet the center fold. Sew closed to finish bias tape.
  7. Match outer mask pieces right sides together and sew the outer curve making sure you match seams for color block. Repeat with lining pieces.
  8. Open both mask halves and press both seam allowances to the right.
  9. Topstitch down the center seam allowance, about 1/4" from the seam.
  10. Pin front and back pieces right sides together and sew around mask leaving a small opening at the bottom of the mask between the center front seam and corner to turn.
  11. Clip across corners, and clip curves taking care not to cut through the stitching.
  12. Turn mask right side out and press.
  13. Topstitch around the mask 1/4" from the edge, closing the hole at the bottom in the process.
  14. Make channel on each side of mask by turning under 1/2". Thread bias tape through channels making loop at the top. Take ends of bias tape and thread through one bead to adjust ties. Tie ends of bias tape together.
