Intermediate 3-5 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Thin macramé cord
  • Scissors
  • 1/2 yd natural linen to match macramé cord
  • Sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • 12"x 16" pillow form

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Begin by cutting two pieces of thin macramé cord, 20" in length.
  2. Tie knots at each end at 2" from the end.
  3. Cut thirty-six 18" pieces of thin macramé cord (18 pieces for each macramé fringe).
  4. Create a reverse lark's head knot by folding each 18" piece of cord in half and attach to the 20" piece of thin macramé cord.
  5. Repeat step 4 for each of the 18 pieces of cord; make sure cord spans across at a width of 12".
  6. Starting with the farthest cord on the left, create a vertical half hitch knot by wrapping the cord on the left (knotting cord) all the way around the knot-bearing cord, creating a loop by bringing it under the knotting cord and back over itself. Repeat 3 times across.
  7. Skip across 3 cords and repeat process but create knots that go diagonally in the left direction.
  8. Repeat steps 6-7 across the cord and continue process down the cord, alternating directions to create a unique pattern.
  9. Tie knots at the ends of each pattern; cut excess cord so there is about 1" from the knot; using fingertips or scissor ends, rough up the ends of the cord to create a fringe.
  10. Cut one 13"x 17" rectangle and two 13"x 13" squares from the linen fabric. Finish one side of each square piece.
  11. On the right side of the 13"x 17" rectangle, pin the macramé pieces to the 13" sides. Adjust knots to fit within the 1/2" seam allowance. Pin 13" square back pieces, right sides together with the front piece, sandwiching the macramé pieces in the middle.
  12. Sew down the 17" sides first, and then sew the 13" sides, taking extra care not to catch the macramé in the seam.
  13. Turn pillow right side out and insert pillow form.
