  • Note Pattern is written for smallest size with changes for larger sizes in parentheses. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.
  • GAUGE:
  • 17 hdc + 13 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) with larger hook.
  • 19 sc-blo = about 4 in. (10 cm); 23 rows = about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) with smaller hook
  • BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

DIRECTIONS:

    STITCH EXPLANATION:
    sc-blo (single crochet in back loop only) Insert hook in back loop only of indicated st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

    NOTES:
    Shorts are worked in one piece.
    The waistband is worked first, back and forth in rows. Eyelets are worked along waistband. Ends of waistband are joined to form a circle.
    Body of shorts is worked in joined rounds, beginning from stitches worked along long edge of waistband.
    The center few inches (cms) of front and back of last round of body are slip stitched together to create leg openings.
    Drawstring is worked separately.

    SHORTS:
    Waistband
    With smaller hook, ch 11.
    Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - you will have 10 sc in this row.
    Next 5 (1, 5) Rows: Ch 1, turn, sc-blo in each st across.
    Next Row (Eyelet Row - RS): Ch 1, turn, sc-blo in first 5 sts, ch 2, sk next 2 sts, sc-blo in next 3 sts - 8 sts and 1 ch-2 sp.
    Next Row: Ch 1, turn, sc-blo in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, sc-blo in last 5 sts.
    Next 6 Rows: Ch 1, turn, sc-blo in each st across.
    Rep last 8 rows for 10 (12, 12) more times.
    Rep Eyelet Row.
    Next 7 (3, 7) Rows: Ch 1, turn, sc-blo in each st across.
    Do not fasten off.
    Notes: At this point, a total of 1/2 (110, 118) rows have been worked, piece measures about 20 (21 1/2, 23) in. (51 (54.5, 58.5) cm), unstretched, and there are 12 (14, 14) eyelets along waistband.

    With RS facing out, fold waistband in half matching sts of first and last row.
    Joining Row (RS): Ch 1, turn, working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across. Do not fasten off.

    Body of Shorts
    Change to larger hook.
    Rnd 1 (RS): From RS and working in ends of rows along edge of waistband, ch 1, sc in end of each row around; join with sl st in first sc - 1/2 (110, 118) sc.
    Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc in each st around; join with sl st in first hdc.
    Rep Rnd 2 until piece measures about 8 (8 1/2, 9) in. (20.5 (21.5, 23) cm) from beg.
    Fasten off.

    Seam Crotch and Form Leg Openings
    Flatten piece, placing join at end of rnds at center back and matching sts of front layer to sts on back layer. Place a marker on each side of join, about 1 1/4 in. (3 cm) from join, for a total of about 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) between markers.

    Turn piece inside out. Working through both thicknesses, join yarn with sl st at first marker, sl st in each st across to second marker to seam crotch and make 2 leg openings.
    Fasten off.

    Leg Ribbing
    With smaller hook, join yarn with sl st in first st of one leg opening closest to crotch seam.
    Ch 8.
    Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; sl st in next 2 sts of leg opening - 7 sc and 2 sl sts.
    Row 2: Ch 1, turn, working in sts of previous leg ribbing row, sk the sl sts, sc-blo in first 6 sc, sc in next st.
    Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in first st, sc-blo in last 6 sc; sl st in next 2 sts of leg opening.
    Rep Rows 2 and 3 until all sts around leg opening have been worked into. Do not fasten off.

    Hold first and last row of leg ribbing together matching sts. From RS, working through both thicknesses, sl st in each st across to join.
    Fasten off.
    Rep around second leg opening.

    Drawstring
    With larger hook, make a chain about 40 in. (101.5 cm) long.
    Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
    Fasten off.

    FINISHING:
    Weave in ends. Beginning and ending near center front, weave Drawstring in and out, through waistband eyelets.
