Intermediate Under 1 Hour
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • 100% cotton fabric
  • 4- 18” fabric ties
  • Pattern template (download PDF under print description above)
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:
  • Download the pattern by clicking “download PDF” below Print Description on the right.
  • Cut 3 of pattern out of fabric. Cut 1 of the pattern on the fold, aligning the fold with the dashed line.
  • Match 2 pieces right sides together, and sew one of the outer curved edges  using 1/4” seam allowance. Repeat with other two pieces.
  • Open both pieces and match together and sew again along the remaining curved edges with ¼” seam allowance. The side with the folded edge should only be caught in the seam about 1” along on each side
  • Match seams together at side and pin. Insert ties into the center section of the mask along the seam. Sew the side seams with ¼” seam allowance.
  • Turn mask right side out.
  • Turn seam allowance from top flap under ¼” and edge stitch to close the opening.
  • Fold top and bottom edge in along the curved seam and press.
  • Top stitch around the entire mask using 1/8” seam allowance.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Make a pattern for the filter by reducing the mask pattern by ½” on all side.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from How Does Anyone Ever Figure This Out??? I've spent many hours, and ripped out the stitches quite a few times. I'm giving up. It looks really nice, so I'm sad that I can't seem to get it. I've made dozens and dozens of masks using other patterns. My favorite one is the Portland, Oregon Joann's store that was created for mailmen. I feel like a failure, so I appreciate the reviews by others.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely watch video first. As others have said, you really need to watch the video before trying to make this (and multiple times while making it). I’m a relatively new sewer and made this with no problems. I did add a metal nose piece under the nose fabric and am using a filter. Pros: it fits well. I feel like my nose/mouth area is fully covered. Cons: it just looks weird. Definitely not your average face mask look. It’s also a bit large, even for my husband who has a larger head/profile than me. If you have a smaller head, or want to make one for a child, I would recommend scaling it back using your printer options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mask...once you decipher the directions I'm so glad that I watched the video (several times) and figured this out. This mask fits me well, stays in place and mostly keeps the fog from my glasses. I'm working with clients and horses so I need to jog next to the horse. I also use the filter option. Making more!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not make this The finished mask would have four layers of cloth, plus a filter. Too many layers. A person would have difficulty wearing it. I am altering the pattern to three layers at the most. Will let you know if it works.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unclear Instructions I figured out the instructions until it stated to stitch all the way around, which closes up the opening to turn it. I just used common sewing sense and didn't stitch that part until later. Then, I found the video and it cleared up the problems. However, to get the mask to fit properly, I added a nose wire in the top between the pocket and front of the mask. Also, instead of ties (which do make it fit nicely but are not convenient) I added tubes of fabric on the sides and inserted a very soft and thin elastic--knot the ends until it fits and tuck the knot inside the side tube.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Difficult This is really difficult even though I have been sewing for over 65 years and the mask is much to big even for an average to large head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and Comfortable Mask I am so glad that I was able to figure out how to make this mask by following the instructions, the video and a little intuition. The directions weren't clear but WOW what a wonderful finisshed product. This mask really conforms to everyone's face that I made so far.
