SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 100% Cotton fabric in a variety of coordinating patterns and colors
  • Cardstock letters and numbers for patterns
  • Thick craft foam interfacing
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Various embroidery hoops
  • Craft paint

DIRECTIONS:

  1. For Letter or Number Ornaments:

  2. Choose letters and numbers for ornaments.

  3. Sew together coordinating fabrics to make patchwork pieces for ornaments. Topstitch along seam lines 1/4" from edge. Press.

  4. Cut out 2 pieces of patchwork fabric you have created for each letter and number.

  5. Cut out one piece of craft foam interfacing for each letter and number.

  6. Lay the interfacing between the two pieces of fabric, making sure that the right sides are facing out. Sew around edges of number or letter 1/4" from edge. Trim to make the edges neat.

  7. Make a loop by cutting a piece of fabric 5" to 6"x 1", fold in half and sew wrong sides together. Turn right side out and press. Finish ends and stitch to the back of letter or number. You can use a coordinating bias tape or yarn if desired.

  8. For Mixed/Patchwork Hoop Ornaments:
  9. Paint unfinished embroidery hoops using craft paint and let dry.
  10. Sew together coordinating fabrics to make patchwork pieces large enough to cut for ornaments. Topstitch along seam lines 1/4" from edge. Press.

  11. Lay a patchwork piece, and a coordinating (non-patchwork) piece of fabric wrong sides together. Lay hoop on fabric and trace along outer edge of inner hoop to create circle. Do not cut circle at this point.

  12. Sew the two pieces, wrong sides together 1/4" from the edge of the traced line. Place fabric in hoop to make sure the circle is the correct size and cut just outside the stitching line and place in the hoop to create ornament.

  13. Make a loop with leftover material, by cutting a piece of fabric 5" to 6"x 1", fold in half and sew wrong sides together. Turn right side out and press. Finish edges and tie or sew finished ends together, to top of hoop. You can use a coordinating bias tape or yarn if desired.

For Solid Hoop Ornaments:

  1. Paint unfinished embroidery hoops using craft paint and let dry.

  2. Lay two pieces of fabric wrong sides together. Lay hoop on fabric and trace along outer edge of inner hoop to create circle. Do not cut circle at this point.

  3. Sew the two pieces, wrong sides together, ¼" from the edge of the traced line. Place fabric in hoop to make sure the circle is the correct size and cut just outside the stitching line and place in the hoop to create ornament.

  4. Make a loop with leftover material by cutting a piece of fabric 5" to 6"x 1", fold in half and sew wrong sides together. Turn right side out and press. Finish edges and tie or sew finished ends together, to top of hoop. You can use a coordinating bias tape or yarn if desired.
