SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Cotton fabric
  • Small embroidery hoop
  • Fab lab wood circles, assorted sizes
  • A small amount of fiber fill
  • Wonder under fusible fabric
  • Embroidery thread
  • Water soluble marker
  • Ribbon in desired thickness
  • Pins
  • Sewing needle
  • Sewing thread
  • Hot glue gun
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use a water soluble marker to draw out desired button design onto the cotton fabric. Be sure not to make the design any larger than the wood circle that will be used as the base of the button.
  2. If adding an additional color of fabric as part of the design, iron a patch of that fabric, slightly larger than the button, to a bit of wonder under. Cut out the portion of the design. Iron it in place on the button.
  3. Embroider the design in desired colors.
  4. Take a small amount of fiber fill and roll it into a ball. Stretch the ball until it is a flat circle the size of the wood circle. Glue the fiber fill to the wood circle.
  5. Wrap the embroidered fabric around the wood disc, hot gluing the back to secure it tightly. Trim any extra fabric.
  6. Working off the ribbon spool, pleat the ribbon, pinning the pleats as they are made, working in a circle. Make sure the pleated circle is large enough to to fit behind the embroidered button.
  7. Use a needle and thread to sew around the inside edge of the ribbon, securing the pleats in place.
  8. Hot glue the embroidered button onto the pleated ribbon.
  9. Cut a length of ribbon 12". Fold it in half making a V shape. Glue the ribbon to the back of the pleated ribbon. Cut a V shape at the end of each hanging ribbon.
  10. You can either stitch a safety pin to the back or your button or glue a pin back to it so you can pin it onto your clothing.
