SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Eddie Bauer Cozy Camp Yarn: 1 skein; 229 yards
  • Double-Pointed Knitting Needles: No. 8 (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch M
  • Darning Needle (to weave in ends)
  • Measuring Tape

GAUGE:

23 st W x 24 st H = 4"

NOTES:

This beanie is worked in a simple 1x1 rib from bottom to top with a folded brim.
A variation on the traditional purl stitch creates a cleaner looking rib.
The finished hat measures approximately 7"x 8" with a folded brim, and 6"x 10 3/4" when unfolded.
Gauge is not particularly important since the rib stitch offers great elasticity.
A smaller or nonexistent peak at the top of the hat can be created by beginning to decrease 1/2"-1" earlier than called for, depending on desired fit.

DIRECTIONS:

Cast on 76 st using basic cast on method.
St should be split evenly across 4 DPNs (19 st per needle)
Join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist as you join.
Work in altered 1x1 rib st for 9.5": *k1, ptbl carrying the yarn under and clockwise around the right needle as you pull through to create the purl,* rep from * to *.
Begin Decrease rows.
Decreases are worked per needle, so be sure there are still 19 st per needle.
Dec Row 1: *ssk, cont in rib based on prev row until last 2 st on N1, K2tog; p1, pm, ssk, cont in rib until last 3 st on N2, k2tog, pm, p1,* repeat from * to * on N3 and N4. (8 st decreased and 4 markers placed - 2 each on N2 and N4)
Dec Row 2: *k2, cont in rib until last 2 st on N1, k2, p1, sm, k2, cont in rib until last 3 st on needle, k2, sm, p1,* repeat from * to * on N3 and N4 (no st decreased this round)
Note that this round is performed only once to create a more gradual decrease transition.
Dec Row 3 - final: repeat Dec Row 1 until there are 20 st remaining between all 4 needles.
Final Dec Row - *ssk, p1, K2tog, p1, rm, k3, rm, p1,* rep from * to * (16 st left between all 4 needles)
To bind off, cut a 16" tail of yarn.
Thread tail through a tapestry needle & run clockwise (as if continuing to work in the round) through all the stitches on the needles, dropping them off as you go.
Pull tight & cinch the top together.
Run through the circle of stitches a few more times to strengthen.
Thread tail to back side of work & run the opposite way to secure the tail & weave in tail on backside.
Weave tail from beginning of hat into the RS of the hat since the brim will fold up & cover that area.
Trim ends.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Many knitters often carry their yarn counter-clockwise and over the left needle when doing a purl stich. Carrying the yarn under and clockwise creates a slightly shorter amount of yarn that gets pulled through to create a slightly tighter purl stitch - which in turn creates a much cleaner looking rib.
ABBREVIATIONS:
Cont - continue
Dec - decrease
DPN - double pointed needle(s)
K - knit
K2tog - knit two together (creates a right leaning decrease)
N1, N2, N3, N4 - needle 1, 2, 3, 4
P - purl
Pm - place marker
Prev - previous
Ptbl - purl through back loop
Rep - repeat
Rm - remove marker
RS - right side
Sm - slip marker
Ssk - slip, slip, knit (creates a left leaning decrease)
St - stitch(es)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Easy rib knit hat Can not get pattern and needed supplies to open/download. Over the last year or so I have become increasingly unhappy with the store Selection sucks. Bolts of fabrics on the floor. Fabric poorly wrapped. Wrinkled with creases I doubt pressing will remove.
