SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/4 yd Swaddle fabric or cotton
  • 1/4 yd Flannel
  • Lightweight fusible interfacing (for brimmed bonnet)
  • 12mm Bias tape maker
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

BRIMLESS BONNET

  1. Use attached PDF to cut out outside fabric, flannel lining side pieces and top.

  2. Cut a long piece of outside fabric, 1 1/4"x 38", at a 45-degree angle across the grain of the fabric. Use the bias tape maker to press it into bias tape, and set it aside.

  3. Pin a long edge of the top flannel piece to the long curved edge of a side piece. Sew around the seam, and clip triangular notches in the curved seam allowances to help reduce the seam bulk and allow the seam to lie flat. Press seam with iron.

  4. Pin the remaining edge of the top flannel piece to the long curved edge of the remaining side piece. Repeat steps as before.

  5. Repeat steps for the outside pieces.

  6. With right sides together, pin the bottom of the outside bonnet to the bottom of the flannel bonnet. Sew together. Turn right side out, tuck flannel interior into the outside exterior and press seam.

  7. Unfold one side of your bias tape length, find the center and pin to the center of the raw bonnet edge. Continue to match the edges along the rest of the raw bonnet edge, pinning into place as you go. Then, sew along the pressed crease of the bias tape. Refold the bias tape over the edge of the bonnet, pinning into place as you go. Edge stitch the bias tape together. Finish the ends by tying a small knot.

BRIMMED BONNET

  1. Use attached PDF to cut out outside and flannel side pieces and top, as well as two outside brim pieces, and an interfacing brim piece.

  2. Adhere the interfacing to one outside brim piece and set aside.

  3. Cut two long pieces of outside, 1 1/4"x 12", at a 45-degree angle across the grain of the fabric. Use the bias tape maker to press them into bias tape, edge stitch them together, tie a small knot at one end of each, and set them aside.

  4. Pin a long edge of the top flannel piece to the long curved edge of a side piece. Sew around the seam, and clip triangular notches in the curved seam allowances to help reduce the seam bulk and allow the seam to lie flat. Press seam with iron.

  5. Pin the remaining edge of the top flannel piece to the long curved edge of the remaining side piece. Repeat steps as before.

  6. With right sides together, pin the straight edge of the outside and interfacing brim piece to the front edge of the flannel bonnet, centering the brim on the bonnet. Sew along the edge.

  7. Repeat steps for the outside pieces and remaining outside brim piece. This time, also attach the ties to the bottom of the front edge with a 1/8" seam allowance.

  8. With right sides together, tuck the flannel piece inside the outside piece, matching all edges together and pinning. Make sure the ties are tucked between the layers and out of the way of the sewing machine. Sew along the pinned edges, leaving an opening at the back of the bonnet. Clip triangular notches around the curved seams and trim the seam allowance in the corners of the brim and at the bottoms of the front edge.

  9. Turn right side out, and hand or machine stitch the opening closed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute Bonnet It looks like they added dimensions to the pattern since the other reviews were posted, so this pattern is useable now. You will have to scale it yourself though. I just blew it up on my computer screen and traced it, then just used a ruler to cut the straight piece. I believe that seam allowance is not included. I didn't realize this before I cut it, so I used a 1/2" seam allowance on the 12 m size and it ended up fitting my 9 month old pretty well. It only took a couple hours to put together and is pretty cute. I had been looking for a free brimless bonnet pattern so I'm glad I found this!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What size? Please provide a scale to enlarge the pattern to. With out knowing how big to make the pattern this is a useless pattern. So I can't rate any higher than a one and that only because it's cute.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mystery Pattern Scale The pattern prints on one page. It is smaller than a doll pattern. If I knew the necessary scale I could print it out and use the pattern.
