SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 4, sch 40, 1 1/4"x 10' PVC tube
  • PVC 1 1/4": 6 Caps, 6 Tees, 2 Elbows
  • PVC cement
  • 56" W x 8' 1" white, blackout fabric
  • 2, 1"x 20' Aleene’s Permanent Fabric Tape
  • 32, 7/16" grommets & tools

  • Iron
  • #11 blade X-Acto knife
  • Scissors
  • Rotary cutter & cutting board or scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Yardstick
  • T-square
  • Hacksaw

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Quickly steam press the fabric. Cut fabric to 4' 7"x 8' 1" using rotary cutter. On back of fabric mark lines 3" in from all four edges. Mark 1 1/2" squares at each corner. Cut off corner squares. Fold and steam press each edge to the 3" mark. Lay fabric on a clean flat surface, WS up. Open folded edges. Start on one long edge. Press one continuous length of 1" fabric tape along 3" line. Tape on side of line closest to edge of fabric. Press tape in place with heels of hands. Open the back of tape and press edge of fabric on fold so edge of fabric completely covers tape. Press hem well with heels of hands. Repeat for other long edge then short sides.
  2. On the back of the fabric mark center spots for grommets following template layout. Center the grommets in the hem, 3/4" from folded edges. Use a grommet back to draw circles around center marks. Use an X-Acto knife to cut out circles. Attach grommets as per manufacturer’s directions. Set aside.
  3. Cut four 10’ PVC pipe for frame with a hacksaw or other handsaw.
  4. Cut 8' & 2'
    Cut 2 @ 3' 11 1/8"
    2 @ 4'6", 1@ 1'
    1 @ 2', 5 @ 1', 3' excess
  5. See template for layout of parts. Glue connectors to pipe. Set the bases of the three legs at a 90 degree angle from frame.
  6. Iron the fabric. Attach the fabric to the frame. Use two zip ties through each corner grommet to attach to the top or bottom and one side. The fabric should land 1" inside of frame. Adjust zip ties to tighten after all ties are loosely set in place.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Prior to gluing pipe to connectors lay out all parts with factory printed labels facing to one side. Factory markings may be removed by sanding with a fine sandpaper.
  • Alternate to template legs: Cut only the three 2' uprights for the legs. Purchase three 5 gallon buckets and sand to fill buckets. Place each 2' leg into a sand filled bucket. This will eliminate the need for three of the Tees and the six Caps.
  • Optional: Add a 2" wide band of black felt tape on the front of the fabric at the edges, prior to adding grommets. This will enhance contrast of the projected image and will make the image appear clearer and more colorful.
