Intermediate Weekend Project

Crow Headpiece

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1yd black felt
  • 5 different 3" fabrics that do not need to be hemmed or scraps from Crows Wings McCall's 7491
  • Sheet of Eva foam
  • 3/8yd shiny black faux leather for beak
  • Black headband
  • Fabri-Tac
  • Caulk
  • Kraft paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Draw 18"x 16" rectangle on Kraft paper. Wrap paper around head to below the ears to get the angle to make the paper stand up to match the image. Mark with pencil on the height and length wanted. Draw peaks and valleys, cut to resemble feathers. There should be about 7 or 8 feathers on each side of center front. Trace with chalk from paper pattern to one layer of felt. Layer the bottom of felt, Eva foam in the middle, then felt with chalk marking of feathers on the top. Top stitch with black thread around the feathers and bottom of head piece. Cut around excess felt feathers close to top stitching.
  2. Cut out about 50 adornment feathers, all different sizes and fabrics. Place them randomly to mimic a spread of feathers. Top stitch in the middle of each feather to mimic a center vain.
  3. Cut out two felt 6"x 3". Top stitch to base of head piece, starting at the base rounding up to 3" then going back down to nothing at the center front. Cut excess felt close to the top stitching.

BEAK:
  1. Cut a pattern out of Kraft paper 12"x 11". The 11" will be the longest part of the beak. The size can be adjusted from small to large. For the beak to slope downwards, fold out a dart in the center about 2" or more, going down to nothing.
  2. Add a 1/4" seam allowance to sides and top of beak.
  3. Cut 2 of faux leather and 1 of Eva foam. Place Eva foam to wrong side of faux leather then place right sides, sew the 1/4" seam allowance, turn. Smooth out the top beak. (If needed, steaming the faux leather may be helpful for shaping (do not press, just steaming over a dressmaker's ham would be helpful). If the underside beak fits loosely sew the dart in a little. Cut a 1 1/4" strip long enough to bind the raw edge of beak, top stitch on to base of headband.
  4. Place headband on the head, adjust headpiece to headband to go downward, mark placement, stitch ends of headband to headpiece then Fabri-tac on top of stitching.
  5. If the feathers are sticking up too much put a dab of Fabri-tac to hold them down.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use a #14 sewing needle for sewing faux leather.
  • Use a silicone foot when sewing faux leather so that seams do not wrinkle.
  • If faux leather is hard to work with, steam the faux leather to become temporarily soft. It can be handled easily for a short time. Steam again if needed.
  • Steam seams lightly, if necessary.
